Traditionally, when we talk about modem, the first thing comes to our mind is the 56K/Voice/Data/Fax modem, but it is more than that. We start with early technology and evolve to higher technology, so is the history of modem.

What is a modem?

A modem is a general name for a device or program that enables a computer to transmit data and receive data digitally. Computer information is then stored while information data is transmitted via analog waves. A modem is the bridge that converts analog waves into digital data and convert digital data into analog waves in order to transmit the data through the telephone lines.

There are different interface to connect the modem to the computer, one of the well known ones is RS-232, the other that we use mostly on plug and play device is using USB, wherease an external modem can be attached to any computer that has an RS-232 port, and now USB, which most personal computers have. 

There are also internal and external type of modem. Internal modem connects to compute through PCI slot, and external modems nowadays connect through RS-232 and commonly used USB.

What is a voice modem?

A voice modem is a term commonly used to describe an analog telephone data modem with the capability of transmitting and receiving voice or so called voice recording over the phone. Voice modem are used for telephony and answering machine applications. Since it is also transmitting data through telephone to computers, therefore, it is also called a modem.

What is a USB voice modem?
A usb voice modem is a modem connect to PC using USB.

Can I use my 56k/data/fax/voice modem to do telephony?

Professional telephony shall not use regular 56k voice/data modem because those modem have very poor quality voice mode. Most of them are half-duplex, even it is full-duplex, due to the poor quality, it is hard to do professional telephony tasks.

Can I use a voice modem to receive fax?
A voice modem is not capable of receiving fax. However, if you are using a TAPI compliant telephony card device, such as Way2call Hi-Phone Desktop, you can connect your fax machine to the telephony device. The telephony device is acting as a phone system gateway to connect to different phone and fax systems.
